Hey there!

Today I want to talk about one of the most powerful ways that you can .connect with your audience.

And that is email list segmentation.

Many people haven’t ever heard of this before and for the people who have, sometimes they have trouble knowing how to really implement it.

So first let’s start with what it is.

It’s actually just a way of breaking down your email list into smaller groups that have like attributes with each other that way you can hit them with messaging that’s more specific to those individual people.

It resonates more it helps drive engagement and eventually drives revenue.

And that’s what we’re all here for.

So, now that we understand the basic idea of segmentation, let’s talk about how you can actually implement it.

A lot of it really depends on your business and your product but let’s just talk about some general ideas for now.

So one one group you could split off from your list would be people who have purchased from you – The type of product that they bought or the department that it’s in.

People who have purchased in the past are obviously going to be interested in that specific thing, so that’s one segment.

Another one could be prospects – people who haven’t bought anything yet, but they’re definitely interested in what you have to say.

And then, really kind of a cheat code that I like to use is surveys. Just send a quick email survey to your list and flat out ask them what they’re interested in.

Give them a few options that you cover and maybe they’re interested in all or maybe they’re interested in some. But self-segmentation is one of the best ways to do this.

So, a quick example might be if you sell products for hiking, backpacking, and outdoor cooking. Send your survey with all those on there to see who in your list is interested in which of those areas.

I mean, obviously they’re related but, they’re also very clearly different. So maybe I like one thing and not the others.

So based on those responses, you filter those people into each of the buckets, then you know that if I’m interested in outdoor cooking that I’m for sure getting your outdoor cooking messaging.

Same with backpacking, hiking, the other pieces that you have.

So I’ve indicated that I’m interested in this thing and you know that I want to hear about it, why wouldn’t you send me stuff about that?

You’re not just guessing anymore!

It’s a great, super easy way to get your list really engaged.

And, of course, you can get way more sophisticated with it if you want. These are just a few examples to get started.

I mean if you can dream it you can have a segment about it.

Then, of course, use your marketing automation system to keep track of everything – make sure people are in the right buckets, getting the right messages blah blah blah.

It gets really crazy really fast.
